Interactive Worlds Introduces Realistic gameplay
Unlike the previous games in the series, Lara's environment is now much more realistic and interactive. Footprints will be left in mud, for example, but only until it rains and then they will wash away. Lara's shirt will also get wet, and she's more likely to lose her grip if she is standing on a slippery, rain-soaked ledge. When the sun comes out, her shirt will dry and the slippery surfaces regain their friction.

In Underworld, Lara also has a lot more flexibility in how she makes her way through a level, as there is often more than one way to get from here to there. She can now climb walls with texture and rocky outcroppings to reach areas she previously wouldn't have been able to access.

All of these additions have been made to give the game a non-linear, open feel. Players can interactive with the environment by doing things they find to be intuitive, and the game will respond in an appropriate way. When Lara interacts with trees, for example, she will push aside leaves using either one or two hands depending on whether or not she's holding something. These details give a lifelike, immersive sensation to the game.

New Melee Combat System
Underworld introduces a new melee combat system that requires players to strategically strike with offensive, defensive, and evasive maneuvers. Lara can now attack enemies with different punches, kicks, knees, and other acrobatic onslaughts. Items lying on the ground, such as poles that were previously walked on, can be picked up and swung at enemies. Players can also perform a greater variety of actions with weapons; for example, Lara can now hold onto a ledge with one hand and fire a gun with the other.

Realistic Enemy and Animal AI
The AI in Tomb Raider: Underworld has also taken a big step forward--both enemies and animals now make independent decisions based on their surroundings, employ ambush and squad tactics when fighting, and will retreat if deemed necessary.
With updated graphics and a more immersive and realistic gameplay, Tomb Raider: Underworld will have both fans and newcomers excited about the newest installment in this popular video game-pinup franchise.

The story begins as a prologue, in the lower corridor of Croft Manor where Lara has to escape from a fire. Upon entering the main hall, she is surprised to see the mansion in flames. As she reaches the main door, Zip shoots at her as Winston tries to restrain him. The game goes back a week in the past, showing Lara in the Mediterranean Sea. Lara is searching for a way to Avalon, the mystical resting place of King Arthur, and the place where Amanda claimed Lara's mother is at the end of Tomb Raider: Legend. Lara finds a temple of "Proto-Norse" origin, leading her to believe that Avalon and the Norse underworld of Niflheim are one and the same. She also finds a gauntlet, supposedly belonging to the Norse god Thor. Lara is caught off guard by mercenaries working for Amanda, who takes the gauntlet and leaves her. After pursuing them to their ship, she meets Natla, who Amanda has in captivity. They began discussing Lara's find and Natla states that Avalon is the same as Helheim, rather than Niflheim as Lara had supposed, and that Lara will need Thor's hammer, Mjölner to enter. The ship begins sinking due to an explosion caused by one of the mercenaries in a firefight with Lara. Lara shoots at a fleeing Amanda who throws the gauntlet into the sea in order to distract Lara (and possibly due to Natla's assertion that only Lara can use the gauntlet). Lara quickly jumps in to get it, letting Amanda escape.

Lara travels to coastal Thailand, as Natla had suggested, where she discovers that her father had already been there and took the gauntlet back to a hidden study beneath Croft Manor. After locating the gauntlet, as well as a map locating Thor's belt and hammer, Lara is surprised to find the manor going up in flames, the scene from the beginning of the game. An injured Zip, assisted by Winston, shoots at her as he thought Lara had shot him after taking Amanda's "Wraith Stone" from the vault. Lara and Winston convince Zip it was not her and Lara tells them to get out of the mansion while she goes to view the security video in the computer room. Before she does however, she notices an odd reflection of herself in the room's glass wall. As she gets closer, she sees it is actually a doppelgänger, apparently created by Natla. The doppelganger then shoots Alister, who was trying to escape the flames. Lara tries to shoot the doppelgänger, but she is able to predict and evade Lara's every move. As the doppelgänger flees, Lara runs to Alister, but finds him at his last breath. She carries his body out of the house to Zip and Winston. Lara resolves to continue searching for Mjölner, believing the search will lead to Amanda and Natla, who she holds responsible for Alister's murder. Lara also believes Mjölner will give her the power needed to kill Natla. In Mexico, Lara retrieves Thor's belt, which powers the gauntlets needed to wield his hammer. After retrieving the belt, she heads to Jan Mayen Island and finds Mjölner in Valhalla. She also finds a message from Odin, Thor's father, saying that he will need to perform a ritual before Thor can open the way to Helheim.

With the gauntlets, belt and hammer, Lara confronts Natla on Amanda's second ship. The doppelgänger appears and throws Amanda aside. Lara reluctantly agrees to work with Natla who claims to know Odin's ritual. Lara travels to the Arctic Sea and with Natla's help, opens the entrance to Helheim. She soon encounters her mother, Amelia, who has been turned into a "thrall", a deceased individual whose corpse is reanimated by the substance eitr. As the mindless thrall approaches, Lara shoots her saying, "My mother died a long time ago. You're not my mother." Lara kneels in sorrow before Natla appears revealing that she was using Lara and Amanda to get access to Avalon via Thor's hammer. Natla also reveals that she killed Lara's father, Richard, when he refused to cooperate in this task years ago. The doppelgänger appears and restrains Lara just as she was about to attack Natla with Mjölner. As Lara is about to be killed, Amanda appears, defeats the doppelganger, and holds off the approaching thralls allowing Lara to continue.

Lara finds Natla activating massive device called Jörmungandr, the Midgard Serpent, which is designed to bring about Ragnarök or the seventh age, triggering apocalyptic levels of volcanic activity throughout the world. Lara destroys the device with Mjölner and hurls the hammer at Natla, who is overpowered and plunges into the sea of eitr. Lara heads back to Amanda but they discover that the exit is blocked. Lara spots the portal that originally brought her mother to Helheim when she touched Excalibur (as it was seen at the end of the previous game). Lara and Amanda work together by Lara fixing one part of the rocks around it, and Amanda pulls Excalibur. As Amanda pulls Excalibur, Lara and Amanda holds hands and they go into the portal and end up back in Nepal where Lara's mother originally pulled the sword. Lara and Amanda tell each other that they're finally even. Then Lara says goodbye to her mother, finally believing that her mother is dead, and she ends the game by walking away from the portal.
